D & S has an active Supported Employment Program dedicated
to consumers who desire to work in the community. D&S staff
members assist consumers who express a true desire to work by
helping them in their effort to find and maintain employment.
Consumers choose positions that match individual employment wishes
previously identified through a discovery process implemented by
D&S.
We support and encourage independence and responsibility. For
those consumers who want to take charge of their lives by getting to
and from work independently, D&S staff provides training and
instruction on use of the local bus system.
Some of the employers of D&S consumers include:
- Wal-Mart
- Applebee's
- Taco Bell
- The Book Source
- The University of Texas
- Popeye's
- American Fibers
- Pizza Hut
- Smart Mail
- Mervyn's.
Job duties range from janitor to dining attendant.
Each D&S service area has it's own level of voluntary
consumer participation in the Supportive Employment Program. For
example, in the Austin area, 25% of D & S consumers are employed
in the community. Of those employed, 75% have been at their jobs
longer than 6 months. Eight have been employed for over a year and 4
have been employed at least 2 years with the same employer.
Providing Supported Employment to D & S consumers promotes
independence in the community.
