Family Model Living is a type of residential service where
the service recipient resides in a family environment in the home of
trained caregivers other than the family of origin. The service
includes direct assistance and support as needed with activities of
daily living (e.g., bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, eating,
meal preparation), household chores essential to the health and
safety of the service recipient, budget management, attending
appointments, and interpersonal and social skills building to enable
the service recipient to live in a home in the community of his/her
choice. It also may include medication administration as permitted
under Tennessee’s Nurse Practice Act. Each family model home may
support up to two individuals.
D&S Residential completes a comprehensive home study and ensures
that the home meets the service recipient’s needs and that the
family and service recipient are compatible and well matched. D&S
Residential trains the family model provider per the Division of
Mental Retardation Services (DMRS) requirements. Homes are visited
regularly by both D&S staff and DMRS surveyors to ensure quality of
care standards are being met.
