Supported Living
Supported Living is a type of residential service that
provides services and supports that enable an enrollee to
live as independently as possible. The service includes
direct assistance as needed with activities of daily living
(e.g., bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, eating, and meal
preparation), household chores essential to the health and
safety of the enrollee, budget management, attending
appointments, and interpersonal and social skills building
to enable the enrollee to live in a home in the community.
It also may include medication administration as permitted
under Tennessee’s Nurse Practice Act.
Facilities
The D&S Supported Living Program offers nice, spacious,
well-built homes or apartments in established and
conveniently located neighborhoods. The service recipient
owns, rents, or leases their home. The Supported Living home
shall have no more than 3 residents including the enrollee.
The enrollee chooses his/her housemates and shares with them
the expenses of rent, utilities, cable TV, groceries, etc.
The home is staffed 24 hours per day with well trained
direct support staff that help with things people need to do
every day.
Sleeping Accommodations
D&S Residential Services strongly supports the need of
privacy for each individual. Each service recipient has the
option of having his or her own private bedroom. The service
recipient may purchase his/her own furniture with personal
funds or funds provided through the Division of Mental
Retardation Services (DMRS).
Living Areas
D&S Residential recognizes that social activity is an
essential part of everyday life. The service recipient’s
homes offer comfortable common living areas where the
service recipient may engage in activities such as games, TV
viewing, video-game playing, social events, or just talking
over the events of the day with staff and housemates mates.
Housemates purchase all furniture used in the house with
personal funds or funds provided through the Division of
Mental Retardation Services (DMRS).

Meals
Meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking, and clean-up are
commonly shared responsibilities and activities in all
service recipients’ homes. "Family" meals are a tradition at
D&S Residential and all supported living homes have an
adequate dining area for the enjoyment of the service
recipients at mealtime or for special occasions with family
and friends.
Transportation
We encourage service recipients to get involved in their
community. To support the community activities of the
service recipients, D&S Residential provides each home with
a van or car. Transportation may include rides to
employment, day programs, school, church, medical
appointments, shopping, movies, sporting events, concerts,
carnivals, visits to family or friends, community events and
other activities.
